Things You Should Never Store In Your Garage

Our garages tend to become storage spaces for any number of items. As much as we like to think our garages are organized and clean, it gets away from us before we know it. Some things must be stored in the garage while other things might be better stored elsewhere, but there are several items that must never be kept in the garage.

Here are a few important items that should never be stored in your garage.

Propane

For many the garage is usually located in an area that goes straight to the backyard or very close to it. Sometimes it is more convenient to have your propane supply stored in the garage because it’s close to the grill, but propane should never be kept there. Garages are usually full things that can be easily knocked over by a car or even people, especially propane tanks. Propane can explode and cause injury and damage, so be sure to store it outside the house altogether.

Food Items

This goes for both human food and pet food, fresh or canned. Pet food that has been stockpiled will bring rodents and insects. Pet food should be sealed and stored inside your house. The same goes for any human food that can be opened by a hungry vermin. Canned food that you get from the store at room temperature, will go bad much faster in the garage. Extreme temperature changes over time will cause nearly any canned food to spoil much faster than usual. To ensure the shelf life of canned food, store it inside your home. This also goes for other temperature-sensitive food items like wine.

Refrigerator

It doesn’t necessarily pose any threat to food stored in a garage refrigerator, but temperature changes will make the fridge work much harder. Your extra fridge is best kept inside the house where temperatures remain steady year around.

Clothes And Bedding

Clothing items, bedding and blankets all provide warm cover for animals that get into your garage. We suggest storing any extra clothing or bedding in sealed containers inside your home.

To make sure what you do have stored in your garage stays at reasonable temperatures, a new garage door is important in protecting your possessions.

An insulated garage door will keep extreme heat and cold out, protect your things and help keep energy costs down. If it’s time to get that new garage door, call OC Garage Doors and Gates today at 949-205-7699.
