Simple Troubleshooting Tips For Your Garage Door Remote

Just like any other technology in our lives, automatic garage door remotes are supposed to make things easier. Most of the time they work without a hitch and really do make life easier, but there are, of course, times when things mysteriously go awry and we’re left with no idea of what to do. Here are some simple tips you can do at home that usually get your door working again.

The Remote Only Works When You’re Close To The Garage

Most of the time it’s a battery issue, so change the batteries then check to see if the remote works from a distance. Before you put new batteries in the remote, clean off the electrical contacts. If the remote still won’t work, your problem could be right next door. Sometimes when a neighbor’s remote is stuck or malfunctioning, it can interfere with the signal coming from your remote. If this is the problem, switching to a remote that is below 390 mhz will often fix the problem.

Your Remote Only Works Either In Cold Or Warm Weather

Usually this issue is a problem with the infrared safety sensors that are located near the bottom of the garage door. To test for this problem, go inside the garage and hold down the wall switch which overrides the safety. If your garage door works when holding the switch, then the problem is likely with the safety sensors which must be realigned. The reason this is weather related is that when temperatures are extreme or change rapidly, the steel casing for the sensors can expand or contract causing the sensors to go offline. Call OC Garage Doors and Gates and we can help realign the sensors and get them back to normal.

You’ve Changed The Batteries And The Remote Still Won’t Work

Check to see if your remote is set to the correct frequency. If it is, then it may not be a remote problem, but a problem with the garage door itself. Check to see if the opener is getting electricity. Also check to see if the fuses and circuit breakers have been tripped. If the opener is getting proper electrical power, then the problem is with the inner workings of the opener and needs to be serviced.
