Why is my garage door so noisy?

Is your garage door so loud it wakes people up? Are you wondering if there is something wrong with it? Well, there could be a lot of things causing the noise. It is best to figure out the cause early in order to prevent more damage or someone getting hurt.

No garage door or garage door opener runs completely silently, but there is a difference between normal function and extremely loud functioning. Since the garage door is a machine with several different gears and moving parts, there could be a lot of things that are actually causing the noise. Some things that can cause the noise are the make and model, or even how it was installed.

The most popular thing that causes garage doors to be noisy is friction. As garage doors get older, the moving parts lose their lubrication and start to grind against each other. Things start to loosen as well, and parts or bolts may need replaced. In addition, the hinges and rollers on the garage door age and get louder during function. This doesn’t necessarily mean there is a problem, it just means the garage door is getting old.

In most cases of noisy, old garage door openers, you can simply add lubricant to the moving parts. Just go to any home improvement store and ask for a lubricant specially made for garage door openers. You should never use WD-40 because it tends to attract additional dirt and can drip on your car.

So, what happens if my garage door isn’t old, but it is still making a lot of noise?

If you have a fairly new garage door and it has started becoming really loud when it operates, this could mean there is an underlying problem. The best thing to do in this instance is to call a professional who can thoroughly assess the issue.
