Automatic Garage Door Safety Tips

You may have had your automatic garage door for a while and, even though it seems to be in working order, it is a good idea to regularly check for problems and perform some basic tests to make sure it is safe for you and your family to use.

We highly recommend becoming familiar with all the safety features of your garage door. Although a garage door is one of those things we don’t pay much attention to until it stops working properly, it is still a major (and heavy) piece of machinery with many moving parts that has the potential to hurt someone.

OC Garage Doors and Gates suggests that the following safety measures be checked on a regular basis:

  • Make sure the basic movement of the garage door works correctly. Is the garage door on track and balanced? Is it able to move smoothly in reverse? Do you notice any loose cables, springs or anything that seems it may be out of place?
  • Test the garage door’s auto-stop and reverse feature. This can be easily done by rolling large ball (like a basketball) or even a paper towel roll under the door while it is moving down. If the garage door is operating correctly, once the door senses an object in its path, it should reverse its downward path and go back up. If the door doesn’t reverse itself, call OC Garage Doors and Gates right away.
  • Talk to your kids about garage door safety. Kids who play near the house will usually not be far from the automatic garage door. And kids will, at one time or another, be curious about anything big and electronic. Always remember to keep your children away from a moving garage door at all times and keep remote controls hidden from small kids as well.
  • Be familiar with the emergency release function. This feature allows you to open your garage door if and when it stops working. This is a potentially life-saving feature that you should know about. If you have any questions about how to use the emergency release feature, call us and we will be glad to show you how it works.
  • Never leave the garage door open. It seems obvious, but sometimes we forget or think nothing bad could happen. An open garage door is an easy target for a criminal looking to steal your property. Not only are the contents of your garage at their fingertips, it’s a simple way for someone to enter your home. Make sure it’s closed all the way, even a small opening can allow stray animals or rodents inside.
  • Keep your garage area well-lit. Once again, since the garage is the first place a thief looks when they want to enter your home, lighting the area is important for security.
  • For security and safety, make sure to repair a malfunctioning garage door promptly.

OC Garage Doors and Gates believes that safety comes first. We are glad to help you make your garage door and surrounding area as safe as possible. When we install a new automatic garage door, we will make sure all safety features are working properly. If you need automatic garage door repair or replacement to ensure your family’s safety, call us today at 949-205-7699.
